WorkFlowy v.s. Simplenote

Blog post: WorkFlowy v.s. Simplenote

This a comparison between an extremely powerful, albeit unconventional note taking app (WorkFlowy) and a simple, no nonsense, good enough note taking app (Simplenote).

For starters I’m writing this in Simplenote and there’s a reason for that. I’ll get to that later. Both WorkFlowy at workflowy.com and Simplenote at simplenote.com are safe websites. I’ve checked their ratings at Web of Trust mywot.com

They both don’t spam you. WorkFlowy sends you weekly summaries but you can unsubscribe to them.

Quick facts
$ Simplenote
– every note is a document with a title and any tags you include
– available for Android, iOS, Fire OS, Linux, and the web
– a list of your tags are a part of the interface
– lets you create a pin for the mobile apps
– lets you share or download notes
– includes a trash bin for deleted notes
– basic search (somewhat limited if you ask me)
– lets you recover previous versions of a note
– only allows rich text formatting through mark down as far as I know

$ WorkFlowy
– every note is a bullet
– every note has it’s own URL
– all your notes are in one document
– knowing the tags you’ve used is kind of up to you
– lets you share notes as a shareable link or export your notes
– can be used as a task management app
– includes #hashtags
– includes @handles
– allows rich text formatting
– needs a desktop for some features
– available for Android, iOS, Chrome OS, and the web
– not really optimized for mobile devices
– lets you export all notes in one fell swoop
– allows rich text formatting by default out of the box
– powerful search bar
$ More explanation
– In Simplenote for Kindle Fire OS, you can’t search for special characters
– You apparently need to be on a desktop to format text in WorkFlowy
– Moving bullets in WorkFlowy can be difficult on mobile, touch screen devices
– Workflowy allows Boolean searches, and special searches like is:shared for bullets you’ve shared

$ Conclusion
WorkFlowy is great for those who want to flex their geek muscles and use a unique, advanced app. Simplenote is great for someone looking for an app that gets the job done. Not to mention it’s great for writing drafts of a blog post. I did choose it for drafting this post after all. Simplenote makes it easy to write what you need to write and transfer it somewhere else. In my humble opinion, while WorkFlowy offers features you don’t find else where, Simplenote is better for most purposes.

I write so my words and story can last longer than me. My name is Debrezion; I’m also known as Derezion, Dee or Azen. I always know where I’m at by what people call me. I enjoy church, using computers, and of course writing. I’ve been to Ethiopia twice. I was reared in California, USA but my parents are from Ethiopia. I’m lucky to be alive and I should thank God for that.

  1. # Update: WorkFlowy sends summary of changes which are not necessarily weekly summaries. If you didn’t make any new bullets or didn’t change any bullets you won’t receive any email summaries that week. If you made several changes every day you’ll get plenty of summaries. .They also no longer have a Google Chrome OS app.
